Massage Therapy for Bursitis
Bursitis can make everyday things hard. Getting dressed. Sitting down. Lifting a bag. It sneaks up after a long week of work or a weekend of yard chores. I see it a lot with clients here in the East Bay who stay active or have jobs that repeat the same motion. When the small cushions that protect your joints swell, pain shows up fast.
I’m Geri León, BCMT. I work with people who have issues with bursitis, stiffness, and muscle tension. Massage therapy helps calm the issue, ease pressure, and bring back easier movement. Below are a few questions I hear often for my clients and those who are seeking relief.
What Is Bursitis?
Bursitis happens when a small fluid sac near your joint becomes irritated or inflamed. That sac, called a bursa, acts like a cushion. It keeps bones, tendons, and muscles from grinding against each other when you move. When it swells, the space around it tightens, and movement starts to feel strained. You might notice tenderness, warmth, or even a dull ache that turns sharp with certain motions. It’s most common in the shoulder, elbow, hip, and knee. When the swelling builds, simple things like reaching, bending, or walking can feel harder than they should.
What Causes Bursitis?
Most of the time, it comes from repetition. Doing the same thing again and again. Lifting, kneeling, reaching, or even sitting too long. Tight muscles make it worse because they pull on the joint. A small fall or bump can start it too. Sometimes it builds slowly until one day you feel a sharp ache that won’t quit.
How Does Massage Therapy Help?
Massage works by helping the muscles around the joint relax. When they let go, pressure on the swollen bursa eases. Blood flow improves. The body starts to calm the inflammation. I always start slow and gentle. Forcing pressure makes things worse. As the area softens, I might add light stretching or movement work. Each session feels a bit different because everyone’s pain is different.
Can You Keep Bursitis From Coming Back?
Yes. It takes small daily habits.
- Take breaks during repetitive work
- Stretch before and after activity
- Avoid leaning on elbows or knees
- Keep posture balanced and relaxed
- Build strength around the joints you use most
Massage helps you stay ahead of flare-ups by keeping muscles loose and circulation steady. Regular sessions also help you notice tight spots early, before pain starts.
What Results Can You Expect?
Most people feel easier movement after the first few visits. The stiffness fades. Pain drops. You start to move without guarding or hesitation. Recovery is steady work that brings lasting change.
Bursitis doesn’t have to keep you from your routine. With focused care and mindful movement, your joints can stay calm and flexible. Schedule a session with me, Geri León BCMT, and let’s get you back to comfortable motion again.
