Postpartum Massage Therapy Services
The time immediately following childbirth can be an emotional rollercoaster for new mothers. On one hand, you’re likely overjoyed and filled with love for your new baby. On the other hand, sleep deprivation, anxiety and a whole host of new challenges can present difficult times as well. While new moms are laser focused on caring for their babies, they also must care for themselves in order to thrive.
A postpartum massage is a fantastic way for new moms to prioritize self care, or for a caring husband or other family member to provide an avenue for them to take a little time for themselves. As a massage therapist in the East Bay, I am passionate about providing customized care for a variety of clients with the aim of helping them reach their overall health goals.
In the sections to follow, I will discuss my postpartum massage process and answer a few common questions about this helpful service for new mothers.
Is postpartum massage safe for new mothers?
Because new mothers are used to being very careful about their bodies in the months leading up to their baby’s birth, it’s natural to question the safety of any type of treatment immediately following this event as well. Postpartum massages are designed to meet the unique needs and condition of a new mother’s body, and safety is always a primary concern during my treatments. For mothers who did not have a c-section, a massage can be performed soon after childbirth. For those who did give birth via c-section, a waiting period of roughly four weeks is recommended. Ultimately, the timeline should come down to your comfort level and the recommendation of your physician.
What are the benefits of postpartum massage?
Postpartum massages are ideal for new mothers because they provide a reset both physically and mentally. Being a new mom is draining in more ways than one, and many new mothers don’t realize how tired, stressed and worn thin they are until they can take a minute to breathe. A postpartum massage allows for relaxation while also addressing key areas of discomfort which can immediately follow childbirth. The result is a refresh, both physically and mentally, which is needed for any new mom.
How is postpartum massage different from other treatments?
As is the case with any massage I perform, the treatment is tailored to the unique needs of my client. For new mothers, this means a gentler massage which is focused on relaxation and rejuvenation. After childbirth the body goes through many changes, so a postpartum massage focuses on common pain points like muscles in the back and legs as well as joints to naturally aid in your body’s transition from bearing a child to caring for them.
