Learn if a Prenatal Massage is Right for You
There is perhaps no more stressful time in a woman’s life than when she is pregnant and welcoming a new child into the world. While new mothers-to-be are likely over the moon with excitement about meeting their baby, there are also stressors, changes and health issues which can make the entire process difficult. One way to combat these difficulties is by getting a prenatal massage.
As a massage therapist who serves my home community in the East Bay, I have been helping people reach their health goals for many years. I work with people with many types of medical conditions, those who are going through injury rehab and people who just want to relax, and my services can be customized to meet their unique needs.
Prenatal massages are a great way to relax, recharge and take care of yourself during pregnancy. Many women have concerns and questions about prenatal massages, which is completely understandable and natural. In this article, I will seek to answer a few of these questions and discuss how prenatal massages can benefit mother and baby.
Is Prenatal Massage Safe?
The most common question anyone asks about anything to do with their baby is about safety. This is very understandable, and I am always happy to talk with someone to determine if they are comfortable with a massage. Put simply, there are some forms of massage which are not safe for pregnant women, but when done by a trained professional a prenatal massage is very safe. As a certified massage therapist, I understand which techniques are safe and beneficial for pregnant women and their babies, so you can be assured the massage won’t do any harm.
What Are the Benefits of Prenatal Massage?
A prenatal massage has many physical and mental health benefits. Physically, a prenatal massage aims to address some of the many changes a woman’s body endures during pregnancy. Massage therapy can help with muscle and ligament pain which is brought on by changes in the body, it can help encourage better sleep patterns and even help with headaches or nausea. The deep feeling of relaxation which accompanies a prenatal massage has fantastic mental health benefits as well, and can help combat feelings of anxiety which are normal during pregnancy.
Is a Prenatal Massage Painful?
The last thing I want for my pregnant clients is for them to experience pain. While there could be some soreness following the massage due to stretching some muscles, the level of intensity for my prenatal massages is light and comfortable. This ensures a pleasant experience for the mother and safety for mother and baby as well. My clients who get a prenatal massage can expect a light and enjoyable experience which is tailored to their needs and preferences.
